The concept behind veganism is easy. Animals are not property, they are living, intelligent, sensitive individuals. Any of you who have ever lived with a dog or a cat know how varied their personalities can be and how deeply emotional they are. We live in a culture, though, which tells us that animals are essentially biological machines. They have the ability to react to negative stimuli, but they are incapable of feeling pain or psychological distress in the way that we experience them. This single lie, which most of us accept blindly from childhood, is the justification our culture uses to kill more than 50 BILLION animals every year. Veganism is essentially a boycott of this philosophy, and we abstain from all animal products (meat, dairy, eggs, leather, wool, etc) as well as products tested on animals.
